Lego, this time you’ve taken the Helicopter thing too far

This is an image of the upcoming City set 60093 Deep Sea Helicopter. That’s right, Deep. Sea. Helicopter? Apparently it’s a handy little helicopter that will retrieve your submersible with a handy winch. There are a myriad of problems with this, obviously a helicopter is not the vessel you would use to retrieve a submersible from the sea. What if the hook gets stuck on a rock? Bad news. Also, this is the “Deep Sea” which you only find miles away from land – helicopters aren’t much of long range vehicles. And finally, you see that shark jumping out of the water? I don’t think I need to remind anyone who reads this blog of the dangers of Helicopters hoisting things from the ocean in the presence of sharks…

And from what I can tell, this set is not going to come with Shark Repellent Bat Spray™

Lego Pirates and Inflation

As you know Lego used to make some really awesome Pirates sets. Now they are releasing some again after 5 years of no Pirates sets. I was wondering how the new sets compare price and piece wise to the classic sets and the 2009 era sets. All inflation calculations were made with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Inflation Calculator and the prices listed on Brickset.

I thought I’d start with a ship and an entry level set from each era to compare.

From 2015’s new collection we have:
70409 Shipwreck Defense 84 pieces and $12.99
70413 The Brick Bounty 745 pieces and $99.99

From 2009:
6240 Kraken Attackin’ 78 pieces and $9.99 [$11.02 in 2014]
6243 Brickbeard’s Bounty 592 pieces and $99.99 [$110.34 in 2014}

From 1989:
6260 Shipwreck Island 71 pieces and $12 [$22.91 in 2014]
6285 Black Seas Barracuda 909 pieces and $110 [$210.01 in 2014]

The piece counts vary but all three of these ships are your standard double masted schooners.

As we can see, compared to 1989, Lego Pirates has become a lot cheaper. I believe this is true for all Lego from the early days. More recently though, the price inflation has been turned on for the little sets. I think everyone who collects Lego will not be surprised by this. With the bigger sets it seems it could depend. A 745 piece ship for $100 beats a 592 piece ship for $100 in 2009 (or $110 in todays dollars). In 1989 none of the pieces were Made in China though and I would assume worldwide distribution was not even close to what it is today.

I think the next question to be asked, at a later time, is whether it’s worth buying basically the same set over and over…

New Pirates (and other) Lego Sets Available on Amazon

Click the picture above to see the listing on Amazon.

Scheduled for March 1st release, some of the new sets are already available on Amazon.
Along with the newest Lego Pirate sets are the Elves sets which could be cool, but because they are based on the Friends line and have “minidolls” are automatically not cool.

These are the first Pirate Lego sets in five years, so welcome back Lego Pirates (and Imperials).

New Batman Sets this Summer

via BrickFanatics

Two new DC Superheroes Batman sets are coming this summer – and they sound/read very impressive (which would be a change from the latest ones for the most part)

76034 Batboat Harbor Pursuit – it’s about time we got a Bat Boat
76035 Jokerland – a big set with a new Batmobile

Sorry, but I can’t help it…

Review: Lego 70818 Double-Decker Couch Double Decker Couch!!

Pieces: 197  Minifigures: 5  Retail Price: $14.99  Price I Paid: Retail

70818 box f

70818 box b

If this set isn’t from everyone’s favorite set in The Lego Movie, it’s at least from my favorite scene in the movie. I have a feeling the former is true. This is a case of Lego getting it right. Before if you wanted yourself a double-decker couch designed by Lego you had to buy MetalBeard’s Sea Cow for $250. It was kind of a no-go. Now you can get yourself your very own Lego designed couch for only $14.99 plus tax! And here’s a fifteen dollar set that comes with 5 minifigures. Yes I’m counting you too Uni-Kitty!

70818 minifigures

Benny and Emmet and President Business all have two faces. Vitruvius doesn’t have pants but a 1X2XSomething brick. And Uni-Kitty comes with two different sets of eyes and eyebrows, it must be too hard to double side print a brick I guess.

70818 the couch

The couch could be a little better, if the ladders on the sides connected on the top as well and didn’t just stick out awkwardly. The brickset review complained of two different blue colors for the tiles and plates but I don’t have that problem. This does seem to be a mostly Made in China set though.

70818 set

But I can’t really complain too much. I wanted a Double-Decker couch and I didn’t want to spend $250. Even as a $20 set this would be worthy of buying at retail price. If you enjoyed The Lego Movie (and if you didn’t and you’re reading this blog, congrats) you’ll probably want and enjoy this set. I’m giving it an 8.

2015 Lego DC Superheroes Pre-orders (might be) available at Amazon

A little Batman discussion among all this Lord of the Rings.

UPDATE: For now – you can access the link above and see the other sets in the related items area and just click “Pre-order” without actually viewing the item. So you can put the item in your cart and checkout even though the page doesn’t come up.

I was just able to pre-order all of the sets except for Braniac Attack, so 4/5 new sets for next year. The estimated arrival is Jan 6 (with Prime shipping) – I’ll update the links as the other sets links become active. Here’s hoping for a price decrease that results in a “Pre-order Price Guarantee” !

As a fun exercise here is a list of all the minifigures the four sets contain.

76025 Green Lantern vs Sinestro

Space Batman

76026 Gorilla Grodd Goes Bananas
Gorilla Grodd
Captain Cold
Truck Driver
Wonder Woman
The Flash
Batman – Grey Suit

76027 Black Manta Deep Sea Strike
Black Manta
Aquaman
Batman – Grey Suit
Scuba Robin – very exciting

76028 Darkseid Invasion

The Braniac Attack is set number 76040 so maybe this set is coming out later in the year. This is a set I’m keen to get because it has Supergirl. So far Space Batman and Scuba Robin are the most exciting. We have a kind of a Scuba Batman from Penguin Set. Now if only we could get the Penguin Submarine from the original Batman movie…
